in blustery, neaiuireezing wea—
ther the Grinnell baseball team
overcame a two-run deﬁcit and
stalled off last inning rallies by a
determined William Penn team to
record their ﬁrst victory in as
many outings on the Grinnell dia-
mond Wednesday afternoon.

The final tally was 473. This was
the ﬁrst. non-conference win for
the Pioneer baseballers in three
years The win was recorded by
Dave Schatz who came on in the
tenth inning to replace starter
Greg Dean. Schntz threw the pellet
for tour innings, giving up no runs
and only three hits. while striking
out [our and walking none. The
Pioneers were paced at the plate
by iirst Sacker Bob Geller who Cole
lected two hits in three trips, lnr
eluding a double, and knocked in
two runs. with this display Geller
doubled his total output of hits for
last year.

A hit by John shierhoiz, an over-
throw, a tielder's Choice, and a
sharp single by Geller started the
Pioneer batsmen 0“ with a run in
the first inning. William Penn
came back in the second with
two runs on an error, a hit bats-
man, a hit, and a wild pitch. The
Easierners 01 Penn collected ans
other run in the third on a home
run by Bauer.

The iiith trame proved to be the
big one tor the Gi-iniiell team.
Barry Anderson started it on by
laying down a periect hiiiii along
the third-base line. Ron G a t t o I!

caught off third for the second out
of the inning, but this didn't Stop
the Pioneer diamondmen. Shier-
holz walked and Steve Tilly get
on with an error as Nonas crossed
the plate and tied the score. Gel-
let' then doubled, scoring Shier-
holz with the Winning run.

Penn tried to make a comeback
in the sixth and seventh innings.
In the sixth they got two men
on with a hit and an error, but.
Schalz then proceeded to fan the
next three batters to retire the
side. In the seventh Jim (Brow)
Stuart made a great stop and a
sitting throw to iirst to register
